What Is Apache Spark?

Apache Spark is an open-source analytics engine for processing large data sets. It can handle batch and real-time analytics and data processing tasks. Spark began in 2009 as a research project at the University of California, Berkeley, aiming to improve processing speeds in Hadoop systems.

It builds upon Hadoop's model, extending it for more computation types, including interactive queries and stream processing. Spark supports Java, Scala, Python, and R programming languages and includes libraries for machine learning (MLlib), stream processing (Spark Streaming), and graph processing (GraphX).

It consists of Spark Core and various libraries, with Spark Core providing distributed task transmission, scheduling, and I/O functionality. Spark Core uses Resilient Distributed Dataset (RDD) as its primary data type, simplifying computational complexity for users. Spark intelligently operates on data, aggregating and partitioning it across a server cluster for computation and storage or analysis.

Spark's in-memory engine allows for fast execution by caching data across multiple parallel operations. It can be up to 100 times faster than MapReduce for in-memory processing and 10 times faster on disk, reducing reading/writing to disk operations.
